Celebration of the May Horns / Montol Festival

The people of Penzance welcomed in the Summer this Sunday 1st May with their blowing of horns, sycamore may whistles, picknicking, dancing and banging of drums! And what a day and evening the Montol Festival and Celebration of the May Horns it was!

Penzance and Cornwall don't do things half heartedly, oh no! Here in Penzance we take celebrations very seriously - and that includes not a 'dash' of green but 'all' green! Just one of the participators who livened up the night with his fluorescent green glow to celebrate the 1st May Penzance May Horns!

Chapel Street Penzance was filled with the traditional spring festival goers dressed in their white or green attire, complete with the odd bit of greenery to complete their dress. Horns were blowing, drums were banging...

Amongst all the action our bright red front door of Artist Residence Hotel and Gallery Penzance was a-glowing! Wow, what a spectacle! Look at all the cheery faces of Montol Festival goers, such a great evening!

The 1st May 2011 Montol Spring Festival Events started at Trereife House with the traditional May horns picnic and other surprise events. Later on, participants gathered for a procession starting at the Tolcarne Inn Newlyn and winded back through the streets, playing their music and blowing their May Day Horns.
The evening ended with fire performances and the annual May Horns Party at the World Famous Admiral Benbow Pub on Chapel Street Penzance. Decked with green ivy, the Admiral Benbow Montol Festival Party was the perfect way to end such a wonderful day of tradition in West Cornwall.
