Golowan Festival is the Cornish word for Midsummer celebrations in Cornwall, it is a three day festival starting tomorrow, that takes part in the Penwith area in particular Penzance and Newlyn.
The celebrations consisted of lighting bonfires and fireworks and the performance of traditional rituals. However, in the 1890s due to the increased insurance premiums in the town and perceived fire risks.
In 1991 the members of the Kneehigh Theater, Alverton School, Penwith Penisular and Penzance Town Council. Thanks to Penzance Town Council Golowan grew to revive the old traditions of the feast of St John, with the Golowan Band, Serpent Dances, the Quay Fair, Mock Mayor Election, greenery, banners and giant imagery on parade. Hand-made banners and flags adorn the town throughout the festival.
